Trevor Feaster - Private Pilot!

After multiple weather delays, Trevor was finally able to take his private pilot checkride today, which he passed with flying colors!! After flying all the way to Florence, SC to meet FAA Examiner Joey Rogers, he still had to endure near 100-degree heat while getting the job done! Trevor is now ready to take a break from his grueling training schedule and enjoy the rewards of his accomplishment!

Robert Reynolds, celebrating here with his wife and two grandaughters, received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award today from Mr. Eddie Shields with the Charlotte FSDO. This prestigious award is only available to pilots with 50 or more years of active flying who have not had any incidents or received any violations.

Boy you talk about a tense 25 mins. First flight of N581DW took place today at 4:04 pm. Plane and engine performed great….pilot needs to work on landings a little bit but all in all a great first flight. Have a few squawks to work out but everything worked as planned. Picture is after landing and taxi back to hangar. It’s still in one piece!!!!!!!!!!

Susan Hawes – First Solo!


After starting and stopping training several times over the past several years, Susan proved persistence pays off by finally soloing this evening in N897MB! She was able to complete 2 patterns before darkness began to set in. She has now joined the elite group of aviators that can proudly wear the highly-coveted "Wilgrove Stripes".

Susan thanks her CFI ( and boyfriend ) David Gill for all his help. David was able to overcome the challenges of teaching his girlfriend to fly by a simple realization. "It's easy", he says, "I'm the boss in the airplane, and she's the boss on the ground!".

Wes entered an exclusive aviation club today by earning his "Wilgrove Stripes", completing two solo patterns in the famous 897MB! Even with a respectable crosswind and a little bumpiness, not to mention the pressure of the expert "picnic table crew" looking on, Wes proved he had the skills by bringing his ship back to the runway in expert style!

Michael Turner – Private Pilot!

Michael Turner earned his Private Pilot Rating today at Wilgrove with FAA Designated Examiner Joe Killough. He accomplished this rating in four months and 56 flight hours.
Michael is leaving this week to attend the University of North Dakota (burr) where he will be working on his Batchelor in Commercial Aviation Degree. He says he intends to land an A320 at Wilgrove some day.

A few members of the Wilgrove Flying Circus showed up today at Avery County Airport (KGEV) for a trip to Shatley Springs to enjoy an awesome country feast. Brian absolutely dazzled FAA Designated Examiner, Joe Killough today by demonstrating his skills with inverted flat spins and hammerhead stalls and....But wait Brian....this was supposed to be a practical commercial test! Just like his first solo, Aaron had to battle strong winds today, but successfully became Wilgrove Airport’s newest Private Pilot. While Dazzling FAA Designated Examiner Larry Morris with his aerobatic maneuvers; i.e. steep turns, power on / power off stalls, and awesome landings in N897MB at Concord Airport (JQF), Aaron received his Private Pilot Certificate just seven weeks after his first solo! Wow!!

This NOTAM was recently issued by the Tower!

All pilots operating in class "W" airspace are advised that Mr. Nick Michaels has passed his checkride and is going to be tooling around the sky in a Dash 8. Undisclosed and probably unreliable sources have indicated that he just may attempt to penetrate the the Wilgrove airspace. All pilots are urged to be on alert.

He Has Done It Again!
First it was 8322R "The Rocket" and now it is 4168J "The Jet". This undercover picture supposedly shows Brian Lambe after he took 68J to Cumberland, Md. this past Sunday. Appears he is about to lock it up in a hangar and has no intentions of bringing it home! It also appears that Robert Isenhour has now teamed up with this guy because rumor has it the he was flying his chase plane. Can anyone stop these guys? If you have any information on the whereabouts of either of these two pilots please contact the secure and sortof confidential hotline at the Wilgrove Tower.

As of today 8322R will be removed from the schedule. It will be replaced by 897MB later this week when it gets out of the shop. Clear The Airways....He's Back!!!

Winston Martin (AKA The Jamaican Flash) is back with us all the way from Jamaica.   For those of you who remember, Winston was here last year and flew almost 90 hours in just over 3 weeks!   Winston plans to be here for about 10 days on this trip, and is shooting for about 40 hours of flight time.  And the reason Winston loves to fly here, rental for a Cessna 172 goes for about $240.00 per hour in Jamaica.

Adam Johnstone – First Solo!

Adam had a big week – after spending a week snow skiing in Switzerland, he came back and completed three solo takeoffs and landings at Monroe (EQY) in Cherokee N4168J!   Adam is from Canada and is in the U.S. on a contract assignment.  Hopefully he will decide to stay!!

Dylan Morrison – First Solo!

Dylan nailed three solo takeoffs and landings at Monroe Airport (EQY) today in Cherokee N4168J in front of a captive audience including his Mother, Father, Brother, Fiancée, and both Grandparents!  Dylan has worked really hard for this, while working full time, building a house and preparing for his upcoming wedding.  Yes – he was ready!!

David Gill - Multi-Engine Instructor

Wilgrove instructor David Gill continued adding to his aviation resume today by successfully completing his Multi-Engine Instructor checkride at Hickory Regional Airport with FAA Designated Examiner Pat Schmertzler. On his return flight to Concord Airport, he was happy to have both engines running again, as much of the checkride was spent with only one engine operating! ( as had been expected ).

Jennifer Smith Stewart - New Private Pilot

Jennifer, soon to be a new Mom, passed her Private Pilot Check Ride with Larry Morris today at the Concord airport in N8322R.  Sounds like things went very well eventhough the examiner had her fly every maneuver in the PTS.

Robert Isenhour - New Private Pilot

Many years have passed since he flew with the legendary Flight Instructor Dave Thornton at 8A6, but Robert finally passed his Private Pilot check ride today at Wilgrove Airport (8A6) in Cherokee 140 N6792J with designated FAA Examiner Joe Killough.  Is that dedication or What!   Just days after a simulated check ride with Joe, Robert breezed through his oral and practical exam to become Wilgrove’s newest Private Pilot, much to the delight of his wife, Ginger and his 2 daughters, who were in line for their first flight with their Daddy.

The Flying Blackhams add another one!!
James Blackham - New Private Pilot

James started flying at Wilgrove when he was age 13.   He has actually been ready for his check ride for several years, but had to wait until he was 17.   His patience and perseverance finally paid off today when he passed his Private Pilot check ride at Concord Regional Airport (JQF) in Cherokee 140 N6792J with designated FAA Examiner Larry Morris.
Despite clouds rolling in, and his Mother, Jane Blackham (fellow Wilgrove Private Pilot) and Instructor, Gregg Whitt impatiently waiting to hear from him, James was able to give Larry an excellent check ride!   With a recent visit to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and others in the near future, James is ready to continue his career in Aviation!  Next stop - Instrument Rating!
Who will be the next Blackham Private Pilot – Father Peter or Brother Mark?  Maybe even Chris!

Ever thought about signing up with Angel Flight.  Justin Kinee, obviously the one on the right, was wounded by an IED in Iraq in 2005. Matt Pelletier - New Private Pilot

After years of piloting radio control airplanes, Mat can now fly the real things as he passed his Private Pilot check ride today at Concord Regional Airport (JQF) in Cherokee 140 N6792J with designated FAA Examiner Larry Morris.
Mat does have a little secret to pass on to other flight students - He was having a little trouble nailing down his landings, took a week off for a vacation to Mexico, and when he returned, his landings were awesome.   Answer: Go to Mexico!

We have two new instructors that will be joining the staff at Wilgrove in the coming week.

Jeff Hightower comes to us retired from USAir with approximately 27,000 hours of flight time.  He is also a partner in a Beech Sundowner that is based here at Wilgrove. Jeff holds his CFI, CFII, and MEI certificates.   

Sam Lewis also comes to us from USAir and has accumulated over 7,000 hours of flight time.  Sam holds his CFI, CFII, and MEI certification.

Please join us in welcoming Jeff and Sam to the staff at the "Grove"

And please go easy on the "newbies"

Gary Hillenburg, CFI will be leaving us at the end of October.   Glenna and Gary have bought a home in West Jefferson, NC and will be moving soon.  Glenna is going home but Gary will have to learn how to be a "mountain man".  We all wish you both the best and hope that you will visit us often.  Thanks to both for all you have done here at the Grove!!!

Derek Barnes performed his first solo today at Stanley County Airport in the mighty 6792J. This photo captures the historic event as it happened. The only thing brighter than that landing light is the grin on Derek's face!
 
Derek performed his first Wilgrove solo the very next day in 4168J. He's now looking forward to beginning his cross-country training and actually going somewhere!

Pilar Pees gave birth to Samantha at 6:03 this morning, weighing 7lbs/8 ounces, 21 inches long, and with a good bit of dark hair. Mother and baby are doing just fine and will be in CMC University Hospital until Wednesday before going home.   Congratulations to Pilar, Philip, and of course Samantha!!!

Finally, after almost 3 years the ARCHER is back on the line for rent as of today!   It is available for cross country flights only for about the next 15 to 20 hours until the engine completes the break-in.  Instructions are posted on the key box in the office.
